Frequently Asked Questions

Q. What is powder coating?

A. Powder is basically paint in a powder form. It is a dry, powder substance that is manufactured in a unique way. It has to be applied on a coating line – it cannot be applied on site, because it has to cure in an oven. It also has to be made in a powder factory. It cannot be manufactured on site.

Q. Can powder be applied on site?

A. No powder needs to be applied to the part on a coating line. It cannot be applied on site because it needs to be cured in an oven.

Q. Can I make powder on site?

A. No, powder needs to be made in a factory. This is because we have to use specialist equipment such as an extruder and micronizer, to make the powder and then grind it down to powder form. This means we have excellent quality control!

Q. What substrates is powder best suited to?

A. Generally, powder is best suited to metal substrates such as aluminum, steel or brass. It is possible to powder coat other substrates such as MDF, ceramic and glass, but metal substrates are most common. Applying powder to different substrates depends on the applicator!

Q. How long will it take to get a custom color powder coating from Polychem?

A. From the day we receive your color sample to match to, it will take 5-7 days to create your powder and send panels back to you for approval. When we receive the samples, the Polychem color matching experts will check the match and then enter the work into our system to be made. Once the color is matched then the powder is created, sprayed onto panels and then sent back to you for approval. We can also match and make the powder straight away – it’s up to you!

Q. What is the smallest batch size available?

A. We know you need flexibility in your business so our powders start at only 5lb. From 5lbs to 250lbs – we’ve got you covered! Need a huge order? No problem, our sister brand IFS Coatings is standing by to make high quality powders in the same colors in the large quantities you need.

Q. What shipping options are available to me?

A. We have a good selection of different shipping options available with a variety of price options. Your customer service representative is more than happy to explain the options to you and make sure you get your powder exactly when you need it.

Q. Is there a Polychem customer service department?

A. Yes! We are ready to support you in your powder purchase and answer any questions you might have to make sure that the process is as smooth and efficient as possible.

Q. How can I contact someone from Polychem?

A. Call us on 940.612.0401 (Central Time) or email us here to let us know what you need.

Q. How long and at what temperature should the powder coated parts be cured at?

A. For most of our polyester powders, once the part has been coated it must reach 390 to 400 degrees F for ten to twelve minutes. Keep in mind that parts with larger cross sections will require a longer bake time than small parts due to the metal mass. Certain powders should be cured at reduced temperatures due to the characteristics of the color or chemistry, or limits on the part to be coated. We will design a product specifically for your application.

Q. How long will it take to get a custom color powder coating from Polychem?

A. We can usually ship a custom color within 5 to 7 working days. We can expedite shipments using overnight shipping or courier delivery of raw materials to us, and/or asking our employees to work overtime to complete an order. Please note that we must add an additional charge for overnight/courier shipments of base powders or overtime for our workers.
