Truth & Reality

Truth & Reality - see the colors below!

There is something in the air. It’s not just the caution that has never really gone away since the last recession, and it’s not something tangible, butFake NEws LR web pg it’s there and we feel it. We have a lot of concerns, both on a global and national scale. Gun violence, terrorism, the environment, population issues, the rise of the far right…

Society is almost predictable in its unpredictability, and nothing appears simple or one sided any more. These concerns, and the huge changes that have occurred in the last year or so (Brexit, the US election results, the North Korea weapons issues) have created an atmosphere of uncertainty and wariness.

What’s more, information overload continues, and consciously or unconsciously we are suffering from Too Much Information (TMI), Too Much Choice (TMC) and Too Much Technology (TMT).

The information that is thrown at us on a daily basis is so often in conflict and we are dealing with multiple truths on multiple levels. Today coffee is bad for you, yesterday coffee was good for you. Dairy is in, dairy is out, Carbs are good, carbs are bad.

The concept of fake news has been popularized at the highest levels and ironically is also used to distort an actual truth. The speed in which information is now sent and exchanged has also contributed to this trend as incorrect info and opposing reports that are constantly changing are rife. Social media is particularly instrumental in spreading news and information quickly and has been manipulated to influence us repeatedly. While we a have long been used to images being edited and manipulated, now so can text, video and even audio.

All of this makes it very difficult to separate truth and lies.

We are also now aware that often these truths and lies are developed and distributed by people who just want to sell something or influence you in some way. What has resulted is an unsettled air of distrust, towards people in power, brands, major institutions and large organizations. Of course, the deliberate dissemination of misinformation is not a new phenomenon and has been in practice for hundreds of years if not more, but what is new is the scale and speed. The availability of this information and access to multiple sources, as well as an understanding of the people behind the scenes attempting to influence us, has all contributed to mistrust

Understandably our response is a desire for realness and authenticity. Asking “can we trust it” of both things and people has become the norm. We want to know the story behind it, understand the reasons and nuances and relax in the research that ‘proves’ it’s real. Technical solutions are being developed to create software to try and prevent the spread of false info, but demand has really shot up for working together, collaboration, research and fact checking. For the first time in many years, high quality media is making a comeback.
